MY STORY
From mom to behavior analyst
My journey into behavior analysis began when I thought I had already completed my education. At the time, I held two bachelor’s degrees, one in Business Administration and another in Criminal Justice, along with a master’s degree in Criminal Justice. But when my oldest son was diagnosed with autism around the age of three, my life took a different direction.
Like many parents navigating a new diagnosis, I had questions. I wanted to understand how I could best support my son, what the therapists coming into our home were doing, and, more importantly, why they were doing it. I wanted to be an active part of his learning and development, not just during therapy sessions, but in our everyday lives.
That curiosity led me to become a Registered Behavior Technician® (RBT®). What initially started as a desire to better understand and support my own child quickly grew into something much bigger. As I began working with other children and their families, I discovered a genuine passion for behavior analysis. I eventually earned my master’s degree in Special Education with an emphasis in Applied Behavior Analysis and became a Board Certified Behavior Analyst® (BCBA®) in 2023.
Today, I am pursuing my PhD in Behavior Analysis, continuing to learn, grow, and challenge myself both personally and professionally. I firmly believe that no single discipline has all the answers. This is why I value collaboration with speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and other professionals who bring different perspectives and expertise to the individuals and families we serve. To me, providing meaningful care requires looking beyond a diagnosis and recognizing the individual as a whole.
As a first-generation Cuban American and a mother of two boys on the autism spectrum, my personal experiences have undoubtedly shaped the way I approach my work. Being on both sides, as a parent receiving services and as a professional providing them, has given me a perspective I carry into every interaction. It has taught me the importance of listening, remaining open to different perspectives, and recognizing that every family has its own experiences, priorities, and needs.
I certainly don't have all the answers, and I don't believe I ever will. But I remain committed to learning, collaborating, and doing my part to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the individuals and families I have the privilege of working with.
